Neural Therapy

What is Neural Therapy?

Neural Therapy (aka “myofascial trigger point release”, “scar tissue therapy") was originally developed in Germany for the safe and effective treatment of a variety of health conditions and has been widely used in Europe since the 1940’s.

In essence, neural therapy involves treatment of the central nervous system. The nervous system is the origin of all bodily functions. Disturbances affecting the nervous system can create disturbances in all other systems (i.e. hormonal, digestive, immune, etc.). Potential “disturbance fields” or blockages affecting the nervous system include: scars (old and new), injury sites, trigger points, infectious agents and/or points of infection, toxicity and events of emotional distress.

Negative disturbance fields create “stress” on the nervous system, compromising its regulation of connected body parts and organs. Disturbance fields can for many years interfere with the normal nervous system regulation in the body. Common examples of this are whiplash injuries and surgeries (i.e. C-section, laparoscopy, appendectomy, spinal surgery, etc.). Nerves need to flow freely for optimal body function to occur. Any compromise in nerve flow can result in poor function, pain, disability and disease. By removing these blockages or interference fields affecting the nervous system through the careful application of neural therapy, optimal function and balance is restored in the body.

What Does Neural Therapy Involve?

Using a local anesthetic known as “procaine”, neural therapy involves micro-injections into nerve sites, acupuncture points, scars, muscle trigger points and other tissues to allow for the unimpeded flow of nerves, thereby alleviating pain and restoring balance to various systems in the body. Sterile homeopathic medicines may also be added to the injection as part of the specific treatment.

The positive effects of neural therapy can be immediate or delayed. Often one treatment can be enough to alleviate the situation, depending on the goal and condition to be treated. In some cases, several treatments may be required. Throughout the course of treatment with neural therapy, different layers of dysfunction can be revealed - whether physical (i.e. old injuries), biochemical (i.e. toxins) or mental-emotional. As one layer is healed, another deeper layer may resurface. This is a normal and desirable progression of the healing response. Using an integrated approach to treatment, other areas affecting one’s well being can be addressed. The naturopathic approach is to treat the body as a whole and to integrate all the systems to optimize a healing response. This may involve lifestyle and nutritional counseling, detoxification, sauna treatment, acupuncture or any other therapy to enhance the regulatory function of the body.
